Håfa adai.
Guåhu si Corey Santos.
I am a Chamoru photographer from the island of Guåhan documenting the waves of Micronesia and the Mariana Islands through an indigenous lens.
For the last 4000 years, our people have passed knowledge from one generation to the next through legends and stories. To be a storyteller is to be one of the most respected members of Chamoru society as we carry the responsibility of educating the future through the lessons of the past.
Micronesia is home to some of the oldest, most powerful waves in the Pacific Ocean, yet in the face of rising sea levels, they are prone to disappearing altogether. Our ever-growing population is transforming our land - our villages seem to be sinking beneath concrete buildings and tarmac while our vibrant reefs are suffocated as a consequence of development.
I am driven solely by the desire to preserve our ocean’s power in all its glory; and to bring awareness to its delicate fragility.
My work is a testament to the strength, beauty, and vulnerability of our ocean. Through my lens, I am able to share stories that inspire contemplation about our responsibility to preserve it for future generations.
